Big Sky hoops tourney – Upstart NAU blows past Griz, into Big Sky men’s finals

No. 9 Northern Arizona posted its third win in four days by jolting past No. 4 Montana, 83-71 in the first semifinal game on Tuesday March 7, 2023 in Boise, Idaho. NAU’s Jalen Cone poured in 28 points, while high-motor big man Carson Towt had 14 points and nine rebounds as the ninth-seeded ‘Jacks advanced to the tournament championship game for the first time in 15 years.

No. 4 Montana won eight of nine games down the stretch to reach the semifinals for the first time in four years. Dischon Thomas had 19 points and seven rebounds while Josh Bannan had 16 points and 11 boards in the loss as UM finished 17-14.

Following the game, NAU head coach Shane Burcar, Cone and Towt along with Montana head coach Travis DeCuire, Bannan and Brandon Whitney addressed the media.
