WEBER STATE SPORTS INFORMATION

From Oakland, to Ogden to Oregon, and now Damian Lillard is one of the most famous athletes in the world.

Lillard, a former Weber State All-American and an All-NBA performer with the Portland Trail Blazers, has been recognized as one of the most famous athletes in the world by ESPN. Lillard was named to ESPN’s World Fame 100, ranking the most famous athletes in the world.

The ESPN World Fame 100 was compiled by ESPN director of sports analytics Ben Alamar and used a formula that combined salary and endorsements with social media following and Google search popularity.

Lillard was ranked 45th on the list of the most famous athletes in the world.

From ESPN’s Johnette Howard –

“A Trail Blazers draft pick who — unlike Greg Oden, Sam Bowie and others — has actually exceeded projections for his career. Since arriving from Weber State, Lillard has embraced being Portland’s leader, not just its starting point guard. He also raps — Droppin’ dimes, droppin’ dimes — under the name Dame D.O.L.L.A.”

He has 2.6 million Facebook likes and over one million followers on Twitter.

Lillard earned All-NBA Second Team honors for the Portland Trail Blazers this season. He finished sixth in the NBA in scoring at 25.1 points per game and was ninth in assists. He made 229 3-pointers, the fourth-most in the league.

Lillard was an All-American at Weber State during the 2011-12 season, the only player in Big Sky Conference history to be named to an All-American team. He ranks second in WSU history in career scoring and career 3-pointers. He was drafted by Portland with the sixth pick of the 2012 NBA Draft.

Based on the ESPN metric, Real Madrid international soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo is the world’s most famous athlete. The top 10 also included: Cleveland Cavaliers superstar LeBron James, FC Barcelona and Argentinian soccer deity Lionel Messi, Brazilian soccer star Neymar, tennis legend Roger Federer, Oklahoma City Thunder superstar Kevin Durant, golf phenomenon Tiger Woods, Indian cricket player Virat Kohli, Columbian soccer standout James Rodriguez and Spanish tennis megastar Rafael Nadal.
