Montana State releases first depth chart for 2016 season

on

The Montana State Bobcats released their first public depth chart of the Jeff Choate era during the Big Sky Kickoff media conference earlier this week. Choate took over at MSU in December of 2015. He has conducted 15 spring practices with his team and did not release a depth chart during spring drills. The first-year head coach’s squad was picked to finish eighth in the Big Sky Conference by the media and seventh by the league’s 13 coaches.

Last season, the Bobcats endured their first losing season since 2001. Since 2002, MSU has claimed six Big Sky titles and qualified for the FCS playoffs seven times. Montana State went 5-6 in 2015. MSU must replace All-Americans at quarterback (Dakota Prukop, transferred to Oregon), tight end Beau Sandland (drafted by the Carolina Panthers) and left tackle John Weidenaar (signed with Cincinnati Bengals). MSU must also replace starters at all offensive line positions except senior preseason All-Big Sky left guard J.P. Flynn. Captain slot receiver Mitch Griebel, a trio of defensive tackles and retired defensive end Zach Hutchins all depart.

Senior running back Chad Newell, junior wide receivers Mitch Herbert and Justin Paige, sophomore converted middle linebacker Grant Collins (now a defensive end), sophomore nose tackle Tucker Yates, all three linebackers (senior MLB Fletcher Collins, junior OLBs Mac Bignell and Blake Braun), junior safeties Khari Garcia and Bryson McCabe and sophomore cornerbacks Bryce Alley and Tre’Von Strong return as starters.
