BOZEMAN — The consensus from the collection of Bobcats gathered in Montana State’s Hall of Fame at Brick Breeden Fieldhouse seemed to hold true among all the athletes giving interviews.
Who is the fastest player on the Bobcats? Everyone in attendance that particular day, including lightning-fast running back Tyrel Burgess and deceivingly speedy slot receiver Coy Steele, each echoed “Troy or Travis.”
As quarterbacks’ coach and passing game coordinator Bob Cole walked by, a Montana State administrator posed the question to the veteran coach. His answer? “Travis or Troy, no doubt.”
It’s both an anomaly and a luxury for Montana State that the two front-runners to start behind center this fall also happen to be two of the best athletes in the MSU football program.
A dozen practices into fall camp for the Bobcats has brought junior Travis Jonsen and sophomore Troy Andersen to the forefront of the battle to replace electric but sporadic junior Chris Murray, an academic casualty for the upcoming season. Jonsen, a former four-star prospect who took his official recruiting visits to Alabama, Ohio State and USC before eventually choosing Oregon, has the pedigree. Andersen, a former state champion quarterback and sprinter from Southwest Montana and the 2017 Big Sky Conference Freshman of the Year while playing running back and linebacker, has the raw talent.
Together, the duo gives Montana State two dangerous if unproven options at quarterback.
