CAL POLY PRESS RELEASE

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Former Cal Poly defensive end/rush linebacker Josh Letuligasenoa signed a free agent contract with the Green Bay Packers on Monday morning.

Letuligasenoa attended the Packers’ rookie orientation camp last Friday and Saturday at Lambeau Field and joined the team’s 90-man roster Monday as a rookie free agent.

“I didn’t really believe it when it happened,” Letuligasenoa said hours after signing the deal. “I still have a lot of work to do. I made the roster. Now I have to keep working.”

Letuligasenoa arrived in Wisconsin last Thursday for physical tests and the fitting of gear. Team officials showed him his locker, which had his jersey with his name on the back hanging inside.

Friday’s schedule included special teams, defense and positional meetings, followed by the first practice session. “Most of practice I was at outside linebacker doing passing drills,” said Letuligasenoa. “I thought I did well with all the reps.”

More meetings and another practice session were held Saturday.

“Then they pulled me aside and told me they want to sign me to a contract,” said Letuligasenoa. “I was so excited. Everything was unreal. I’ve never seen facilities like they have.”

Letuligasenoa will finish requirements for his bachelor’s degree in industrial technology this quarter, graduating in June before heading off to Green Bay in mid-July at Lambeau Field and at St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wis. for the Packers’ summer training camp.

NFL teams can hold as many as 90 players on the roster at this time. With the signing of Letuligasenoa, the Packers’ roster stands at 88, including all the players currently under contract, the 15 undrafted free agents who signed with the team last week and the team’s five draft picks who have not yet signed their rookie deals. The Packers can sign up to two other players who attended the rookie mini-camp.

Letuligasenoa worked out at Cal Poly’s Pro Day on March 27. At 6-2 and 252 pounds, he posted the best time in the short shuttle at 4.34 seconds and also recorded 21 reps in the 225-pound bench press. His 40 time was 4.90 seconds. Letuligasenoa also recorded a 33-inch vertical, 9-foot, 8-inch broad jump, 7.40-second three-cone and 4.34-second short shuttle.

As a rush linebacker last fall, Letuligasenoa finished second on the team with 66 tackles, including 9.5 stops for lost yardage and a team-leading 3.5 sacks. The Elk Grove High School graduate also notched three pass breakups, four quarterback hurries and recovered one fumble.

Letuligasenoa made a career-high 12 tackles, three for lost yardage, in the Big Sky opener against Montana.

Letuligasenoa earned 65 tackles during the 2014 season with six tackles for lost yardage and three sacks. He also forced two fumbles, recovered another and had one pass breakup. His season high for tackles was 11 in the season opener at New Mexico State.

Letuligasenoa’s two brothers, Lefi and Noah, also played football at Cal Poly.

A year ago, Cal Poly quarterback Chris Brown signed a free-agent contract with the Dallas Cowboys while linebacker Burton De Koning signed a similar package with the Ottawa Redblacks of the Canadian Football League.

Two years ago, linebacker Nick Dzubnar signed an undrafted free agent contract with the then-San Diego shortly after the 2015 NFL Draft ended. Cameron Ontko, also a linebacker, accepted an invitation to the rookie minicamp of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Dzubnar remains on the roster of the Chargers, now in Los Angeles, while Ontko is a member of the B.C. Lions of the Canadian Football League.

Cal Poly’s last drafted football player was defensive back Asa Jackson by the Baltimore Ravens in the fifth round of the 2012 NFL Draft. Jackson currently is a free agent after playing four games for the Detroit Lions in 2016.
