THE REPLACEMENT

Dylan Layne

Photo cred: Idaho Athletics

Layne’s commitment to the Vandals in 2022 might have flown under the radar given the simultaneous pledge of his twin brother Jack, a quarterback who was Oregon’s Gatorade Player of the Year as a senior for Lake Oswego. But after a redshirt year for both, (Jack Layne played in three games and started one last year, leading the Vandals to a win over Idaho State with Gevani McCoy out), Dylan looks like the closest to a starting job. Reports out of Vandals camp is that the former high school safety has hit the weight room hard – he’s now listed at 6-1, 220 – and that Idaho coaches like his physicality as well as his instincts.

“I think Dylan is leading the group right now,” defensive coordinator Rob Aurich told Trevan Pixley of the Moscow-Pullman Daily News. “Especially when it comes to his focus, his study and how he’s approaching the game.”
