FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – In a move to ensure stability for the Northern Arizona University football program, as well as consistency for current and potential student athletes, Jerome Souers will continue to serve as head football coach and defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Andy Thompson will be promoted to associate head coach.

President Rita Cheng made the announcement to athletics staff earlier today following conversations with Souers and Thompson.

The news was first reported by Cody Bashore of the Arizona Daily Sun.

“Maintaining stability in the athletics department is extremely important as NAU begins its search for a new athletics director,” Cheng said. “It will be a key consideration for those interested in NAU’s athletics director position to know they are walking into a strong and stable program and will have the time and ability to make coaching decisions.”

It is also extremely important as the football recruiting season is drawing near.

In his 20th season, Souers and his team of assistant coaches have guided the Lumberjacks to the FCS playoffs with a home game this Saturday against San Diego. Souers holds many Big Sky Conference records, including number of wins and the number of years as head coach.

Thompson is defensive coordinator/linebacker coach and has been with Lumberjack football for 13 years. He has been a part of Big Sky Conference football nearly his entire life, including as a player at Montana.
