OGDEN, Utah – Last weekend provided separation in the standings of Big Sky women’s basketball.

After weeks of Eastern Washington and Montana State dominating the standings, the Eagles took control, moving into solo first place at 7-0 with an 81-69 win over Montana State, and a 67-65 win over Montana.

The weekend also saw Sacramento State break national records, with the Hornets hitting an NCAA-record 25 three-point shots in a 126-78 win over Portland State.

For their efforts, Eastern Washington guard Hayley Hodgins and Sacramento State guard Brianna Burgos  were named Big Sky Women’s Basketball Players of the Week.

Hodgins averaged 28.5 points over the two games while shooting 62.2 percent from the field (23-37) and 69.2 percent from three point range (9-13)

Thursday against the Bobcats, Hodgins scored a career-high 34 points in Eastern Washington’s convincing 81-69 win over a Montana State team that was 6-0 in Big Sky play entering the contest. Against Montana on Saturday, Hodgins led all scorers with 23 points in the Eagles’ buzzer-beating win over Montana.

She finished 10-of-18 from the field and 3-of-5 from beyond the arc against the Lady Griz, helping Eastern become the first team to shoot better than 50 percent from the floor against UM this season.

Burgos scored a career-high 32 points and hit six three-pointers as Sacramento State broke the NCAA record with 25 made three-pointers in a 126-78 rout of Portland State on Saturday. She equaled her career high with the six made threes to lead the Hornets to a new NCAA record, three more made three-pointers than the previous national record.

She scored 25 points just in the first half, shooting 5-of-10 from three-point range in the half. Burgos finished 12-of-23 (52.2%) from the field and her 32 points were the most any Hornet has scored in a game since 2012. She also had a game-high and career-high five steals with five assists, three rebounds, and just one turnover in 27 minutes.

There were other impressive performances over the weekend though, as several Big Sky teams improved their places in the standings. North Dakota forward Mia Loyd led North Dakota to a pair of home wins to give the Fighting Hawks a three-game winning streak. UND moved its record to even in the Big Sky Conference (4-4) as the Preseason League Most Valuable Player averaged 18.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists in wins over Northern Arizona and Southern Utah.

Northern Colorado’s Savannah Scott did it all for the Bears during their 2-0 week in conference play. She averaged 9.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 7.0 assists and 5.0 steals. In UNC’s 64-44 win over Southern Utah on Thursday, Scott set a career-high with six steals while scoring 10 points, grabbing eight rebounds and dishing out four assists.
